IMD Warns Fishermen Off Odisha Coast Ahead of Likely Low-Pressure Formation

Bhubaneswar, June 30 (UDN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast on July 3 and 4 due to expected squally weather conditions.

According to the IMD’s Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, wind speeds are likely to reach 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph during this period. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough, making marine activities unsafe.

IMD Warns Fishermen Off Odisha Coast Ahead of Likely Low-Pressure Formation

Officials said the advisory has been issued in view of a likely low-pressure area forming over the northwest Bay of Bengal around July 3. An upper air cyclonic circulation currently persists over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Bangladesh, extending between 1.5 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level and tilting southwestwards with height.

Under its influence, the system is expected to develop into a low-pressure area, which may further enhance rainfall activity over Odisha and adjoining eastern regions in the coming days.

The IMD has urged fishermen, mariners, and coastal residents to strictly follow weather advisories and avoid venturing into the sea during the warning period. People in coastal and low-lying areas have also been advised to stay alert and keep track of official weather updates.

Meanwhile, several parts of Odisha have recorded heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, with a few stations reporting very heavy rainfall, according to IMD data.
