Bhubaneswar, Sept 22 [UDN}:A low-pressure area that has formed over the north Andaman Sea is likely to move west-northwestwards and may intensify into a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, according to the weather outlook. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is expected in southern Odisha, including Ganjam district, while rough sea conditions are also likely along the coast.
In view of the developing weather system, the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department has stepped up its awareness and precautionary measures in coastal areas. Sagar Mitras are conducting awareness drives in coastal villages and using public-address systems to alert fishermen about the deteriorating sea conditions.
Fishermen currently engaged in fishing activities in the sea are being advised to return to the shore immediately and avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve. They have also been asked to keep their boats, fishing nets and other equipment in safe and secure locations to prevent damage due to rough weather.
The department is continuing its ground-level awareness campaign to ensure that timely warnings reach fishing communities and that necessary precautionary measures are taken in vulnerable coastal areas.
