Bhubaneswar,Sept 17 [UDN}:: The Odisha Government is planning major reforms in the state’s school and higher-secondary education system, with a particular focus on changes to the Class 10 curriculum, strengthening mother-tongue education, expanding free digital learning and restructuring the examination system.
According to information shared by the School and Mass Education Department, the Class 10 curriculum is set to undergo changes as part of the proposed reforms. The government is also considering the possibility of bringing Class 10 and Class 12 examinations under a single board structure, which could bring significant changes to the existing examination and academic framework in the state.
Another important proposal concerns Open Schooling. The government plans to introduce Plus II-level courses through the open-school system, providing students who are unable to continue regular schooling with an alternative route to higher-secondary education.
Under the proposed system, free education through open schools will be made available up to the age of 18, aimed at ensuring that students who have dropped out or cannot attend conventional schools continue to receive educational opportunities.
The government is also placing considerable emphasis on free digital education. The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha, has reportedly been directed to take steps towards providing digital learning resources free of cost so that students can access educational materials without financial barriers.
Plus II Science and Commerce in Odia
One of the major highlights of the proposed reform is the government’s focus on mother-tongue education at the higher-secondary level. Students will be able to study Plus II Science and Commerce in Odia, expanding opportunities for students who prefer to pursue these streams in their mother tongue.
The move is intended to make higher education more accessible and easier to understand for students, particularly those from rural and semi-urban areas who may face difficulties studying specialised subjects exclusively in English.
The government’s emphasis on mother-tongue education is being viewed as part of a broader effort to strengthen the role of Odia in the state’s education system while ensuring that students receive quality learning opportunities in Science and Commerce.
Greater Focus on Digital Learning
Free digital education is another key area of focus. The government wants students to have greater access to digital learning materials, potentially helping them study beyond the traditional classroom environment.
The proposed measures are expected to benefit students who lack access to expensive private coaching or supplementary learning resources. Strengthening digital education could also provide students with access to lessons, study materials and other academic resources from their homes.
New Office Structure Under Consideration
The government is also expected to take a decision soon regarding the new office arrangement and administrative structure required for implementing the proposed reforms. A decision on the matter is likely to be taken shortly.
The School and Mass Education Secretary provided the information regarding the proposed changes, indicating that the government is examining several aspects of the education system with the objective of making schooling more accessible, flexible and student-friendly.
The proposed reforms, if implemented, could mark a significant change in Odisha’s education system, particularly in the areas of Class 10 curriculum, board examinations, open schooling, Plus II education in Odia, free digital learning and mother-tongue-based education.
