Bhubaneswar,Sept 18 [UDN}: The southwest monsoon is expected to begin its retreat from parts of western Rajasthan from September 19, with weather conditions likely to become favourable for the withdrawal process, according to the latest forecast. The monsoon is subsequently expected to gradually withdraw from northwestern parts of the country.
If the withdrawal begins on schedule and favourable atmospheric conditions continue, the southwest monsoon could completely withdraw from Odisha by the second week of October. Normally, the monsoon is seen to withdraw completely from the state by around October 15.
Withdrawal Process to Start from Western Rajasthan on September 19
The retreat of the monsoon, however, does not mean an immediate end to rainfall activity in Odisha. A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal, while the monsoon trough is currently positioned close to Odisha. Under its influence, several parts of northern and coastal Odisha are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds during the next two days.
Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph in some areas during this period. The weather pattern is expected to undergo a change around September 18.
Meteorological conditions over the Bay of Bengal will therefore remain important in determining rainfall activity over Odisha even as the broader southwest monsoon season moves towards its withdrawal phase.
