Bhubaneswar, Aug 12: Nandankanan Zoological Park observed World Elephant Day on Wednesday with a series of activities focused on elephant care, conservation and public awareness.
The programme began in the morning with the zoo’s four elephants being bathed and decorated. Visitors also got an opportunity to take part in an enrichment activity by offering the elephants fruits and other food items, including coconut, apples, bananas, watermelon, maize and sugarcane.

The zoo is currently home to four female elephants — Basanti, Hira, Asha and Lisa. The presence of the two young elephants, Asha and Lisa, added a special attraction for visitors during the day’s programme.
Mahouts, who play an important role in the daily care and well-being of the elephants, were felicitated during the event in recognition of their dedicated service.
A keepers’ talk was also organised for students and visitors. The session helped participants learn more about elephant behaviour, feeding, care and the responsibilities involved in looking after the animals.
Students from different schools and visitors took part in a quiz on elephants and wildlife conservation. Storytelling and origami sessions were also organised to help children connect with wildlife and understand the importance of protecting elephants.
A signature campaign encouraged visitors to express their support for elephant conservation. The programme also included a movie screening at the zoo library and digital hub, along with an elephant-themed photo session.
The activities brought together children, families, visitors and wildlife enthusiasts and gave them an opportunity to learn about elephants in an engaging way. The celebrations also highlighted the close bond between elephants and the mahouts who care for them every day.
World Elephant Day is observed on August 12 every year to raise awareness about the protection and welfare of elephants. At Nandankanan, the occasion served as a reminder that conservation is not limited to protecting wildlife in forests but also involves responsible care, public awareness and respect for these remarkable animals.
