Bhubaneswar, July 30 (UDN): The Odisha Tourism Department has called for faster approval of pending Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs) and Zonal Master Plans (ZMPs) to support responsible tourism development while protecting the state’s rich natural heritage.
The department has requested the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department to expedite the process, stating that clear environmental guidelines are essential for planning new eco-tourism destinations, attracting investments, and developing sustainable tourism infrastructure.
Several nature-based tourism projects are being planned across Odisha, with focus on creating visitor-friendly facilities while maintaining ecological balance. However, delays in finalising ESZ notifications in protected areas such as Similipal and Satkosia have affected project planning and created uncertainty over development permissions.
The Tourism Department has also urged priority preparation of Zonal Master Plans in areas where ESZ notifications are already in place. These plans would help define suitable tourism activities, manage visitor movement, protect sensitive ecosystems, and involve local communities in conservation and livelihood opportunities.
Officials said closer coordination between tourism and environmental agencies will help Odisha build a sustainable eco-tourism model that supports economic growth while preserving forests, wildlife, and biodiversity.
The move is expected to provide greater clarity for future tourism projects and strengthen Odisha’s efforts to promote environmentally responsible destinations across the state.
