Bhubaneswar, July 1: The Odisha government has formally urged the Centre to establish an All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in the state, aiming to strengthen Ayurveda-based healthcare, medical education, and research.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling submitted the proposal to Union Minister of State for AYUSH Prataprao Jadhav during a meeting in New Delhi, highlighting Odisha’s readiness to host the premier institution.
The proposed institute is expected to enhance access to advanced Ayurvedic treatment, promote high-quality medical education and research, and create opportunities for innovation in traditional medicine. It is also envisioned as a catalyst for medical tourism, benefiting not only Odisha but also neighbouring states in eastern and central India.
The proposal comes as the Union Government plans to establish three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda under the 2026–27 Union Budget. With the selection process underway, Odisha has presented its case by highlighting the state’s expanding healthcare infrastructure and its growing focus on strengthening the AYUSH sector.
If approved, the institute is expected to significantly boost Odisha’s healthcare ecosystem, expand specialised treatment facilities, and reinforce the state’s role in promoting India’s traditional systems of medicine.
