Bhubaneswar, July 9 (UDN): The Odisha Government has initiated plans to develop Model Villages on the lines of the Smart City concept, marking a significant step towards transforming rural infrastructure and improving the quality of life in villages across the state.

According to official sources, the preliminary survey for the ambitious initiative has been completed, and work on preparing the project design is set to begin. The proposed model villages are expected to integrate modern infrastructure with sustainable development, ensuring improved civic amenities while preserving the unique socio-cultural character of rural communities.
The project aims to enhance access to essential services, including better roads, drinking water supply, sanitation, digital connectivity, healthcare, education and public spaces. Emphasis will also be placed on environmental sustainability, efficient waste management and the creation of livelihood opportunities to promote balanced rural development.
Officials said the initiative seeks to bridge the urban-rural development gap by introducing Smart City best practices in selected villages, creating replicable models for inclusive and sustainable growth across Odisha.
The government is expected to finalise the project framework and implementation strategy after the completion of the design phase, paving the way for the rollout of the first set of model villages.
