Bhubaneswar, July 24 (UDN): Odisha is set to have a new Director General of Police (DGP) after the state government approved the voluntary retirement of incumbent police chief Y.B. Khurania, effective August 16, 2026.
The decision paves the way for the appointment of a new state police chief at a crucial time when the government is focusing on strengthening law enforcement, modernising policing and enhancing internal security across Odisha.
According to official sources, the state government has accepted Khurania’s request to retire from service, bringing an end to his tenure as the head of the Odisha Police. An official notification confirming his retirement is expected to be issued shortly.
With Khurania scheduled to demit office on August 16, the state government is likely to initiate the process of selecting his successor from among the senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the Odisha cadre. The appointment is expected to be made before the incumbent’s retirement to ensure a smooth transition in the state’s top police leadership.
Khurania, a senior IPS officer, has led the Odisha Police through several major law-and-order challenges and has overseen initiatives aimed at improving policing, crime investigation, cyber security and public safety.
The impending change in leadership comes at a significant juncture, with the state government continuing to prioritise police reforms, technology-driven policing and enhanced security measures across Odisha.
The name of the next Director General of Police is expected to be announced in the coming weeks following the completion of the selection process.
