Sambalpur, July 3 (UDN): A chief warder posted at the Rairakhol Sub-Jail in Odisha’s Sambalpur district has come under official scrutiny after videos purportedly showing him in the company of two former inmates surfaced on social media, prompting an inquiry into allegations of misconduct and violation of prison service rules.
The official, identified as Dilip Kumar Das, was allegedly seen with two former undertrial prisoners who had recently been released on bail in separate ganja trafficking cases. The videos, widely circulated on social media, have triggered criticism and raised questions over the professional conduct expected of prison personnel.
Apart from the viral footage, a series of allegations have also emerged against the chief warder. It has been alleged that during the inmates’ stay in the jail, they were provided preferential treatment, including access to outside food and other facilities allegedly not permitted under prison regulations. There are also claims that the official maintained close contact with the inmates after their release and assisted them in securing legal support. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Further allegations suggest that certain affluent inmates received special privileges in exchange for illegal gratification. It has also been claimed that the alleged payments were routed through the bank account of a local associate to conceal financial transactions. Authorities have not confirmed these claims, and they remain part of the ongoing inquiry.
Responding to the controversy, Sambalpur Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo said the matter is being investigated. He noted that prison rules prohibit personal relationships or unauthorised associations between prison officials and inmates or former inmates where such conduct compromises official responsibilities.
“The authenticity of the viral videos and all related allegations will be thoroughly examined. Appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the inquiry,” the Superintendent of Police said.
Officials are expected to verify the video evidence, examine relevant records and record statements as part of the investigation. No disciplinary action has been announced so far, and authorities have urged against drawing conclusions until the inquiry is completed.
The incident has once again brought the focus on accountability, transparency and adherence to professional ethics within the prison administration.
