Unsung Hero of Paparahandi Performs Final Rites for More Than 1,000 Unclaimed Bodies, Wins Widespread Appreciation

Paparahandi:May 02:   In a remarkable act of humanity, a kind-hearted man has come into the spotlight for performing the last rites of more than 1,000 deceased individuals. Saheb Nayak, a resident of Paparahandi in Nabarangpur district, has earned widespread appreciation for his selfless service.
Around 40 years old, Saheb Nayak is the son of Ram Chandra Nayak and works as a washerman by profession, running a small laundry shop to support his family. Alongside his livelihood, he has taken it upon himself to perform the  rites of the deceased at local cremation grounds. Whenever a death occurs in the two cremation grounds of Paparahandi, people reach out to him.
Not only that, Saheb also steps forward to cremate unidentified or unclaimed bodies—whether from accidents, murders, or other circumstances—ensuring they receive a dignified farewell according to Hindu rituals. His work stands as a powerful example of compassion and humanity.
He recalls that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people lost their lives daily, and even family members hesitated to touch the bodies due to fear of infection. Moved by this, he decided to dedicate himself to helping perform last rites whenever needed.
Despite his noble work, Saheb continues to live modestly, running his small rented laundry shop with limited means. He expressed that some form of government support or encouragement would greatly help him sustain both his livelihood and his social service. He also hopes for a small permanent stall to run his business.
Having performed the last rites of over a thousand unclaimed bodies, Saheb Nayak is now being widely recognized, and various organizations have praised his extraordinary contribution to society.
