20th May 2025: Bhadrak district in Odisha is taking steps to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its traditional sweet, Paluwa Ladu. Known for its rich taste and simple, traditional preparation, Paluwa Ladu holds cultural significance and is loved across Odisha and beyond.
District Collector Dilip Rautaray has initiated the GI registration process to protect the sweet’s identity and promote it nationally and internationally. Officials have been instructed to include Paluwa Ladu in official events and hospitality packages as part of a larger strategy to showcase local heritage.
Securing a GI tag will help preserve the authenticity of the sweet, prevent imitation, and bring recognition to local artisans. It is also expected to boost tourism, expand market opportunities, and strengthen Bhadrak’s identity as a hub of traditional culinary excellence.
This move highlights a broader effort to protect Odisha’s cultural legacy and support local economies through recognition of its unique traditional products.
