Puri, June 4: The BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group’s technical conference continued into its second day in Puri, bringing together representatives from 11 countries to discuss global strategies for strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience.

The three-day international meeting is focused on enhancing cooperation among participating nations through the exchange of best practices in disaster risk reduction, early warning systems, and response mechanisms.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to attend the proceedings and formally address the conference, highlighting Odisha’s experience and commitment to disaster resilience.

On the opening day, delegates engaged in detailed discussions on key themes including community-based disaster risk reduction, disaster financing, prevention strategies, and improvements in preparedness and response systems.

As part of the technical sessions, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) will present detailed reports showcasing institutional frameworks and operational strategies for disaster mitigation. A special presentation will also highlight Odisha’s success in minimizing the impact of natural disasters and its achievement in reducing casualties during extreme weather events.

Officials said the conference serves as an important platform for strengthening international collaboration under the BRICS framework, while promoting knowledge sharing and capacity building in disaster management.

The event will continue over the next two days with further technical deliberations and expert discussions aimed at improving global disaster resilience systems.
