Bhubaneswar, June 8 (UDN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for several districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds over the next two days.
According to the weather office, districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda are likely to experience intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid outdoor activities during adverse weather conditions.
Several other districts, including Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Balangir, and Nabarangpur, have been placed under a yellow warning, with thunderstorms and winds of 40–50 kmph expected during the afternoon and evening hours.
The IMD has also predicted hot and humid weather at isolated places in coastal and adjoining districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Nayagarh.
While the expected rainfall and thunderstorms may provide temporary relief from the prevailing heat and humidity, authorities have cautioned that strong winds and lightning could lead to minor damage to property, disruption of outdoor activities, and possible impact on standing crops.
The weather department has advised people to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, secure loose objects, and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities. Farmers and outdoor workers have also been urged to take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their livelihoods.
