Tamil Nadu Gas Leak: Odia Death Toll Rises to Nine

Bhubaneswar, June 25: The death toll of Odia migrant workers in the ammonia gas leak incident at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has risen to nine, officials said.

The latest victim has been identified as Rita Juang from Tangiri Dubanali Sahi under Telkoi block in Keonjhar district. She succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The incident occurred on June 21, 2026, when an ammonia gas leak was reported at a private seafood export and processing unit in Tiruvallur district. Several workers were exposed to the toxic gas and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

A significant number of the victims belong to the Juang community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) from Keonjhar district, who had migrated to Tamil Nadu in search of employment opportunities. Most of the deceased were young women.

Several other Odia workers continue to receive treatment at hospitals in Tamil Nadu, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and coordinating with local officials to ensure proper medical care and support for the affected workers and their families.
