Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: Odisha is moving ahead with a landmark effort to preserve its educational heritage, with 49 historic schools across the state set to undergo restoration and modernisation under the Heritage School Scheme.
The initiative seeks to safeguard the legacy of institutions that have shaped generations of learners while upgrading their infrastructure to meet the needs of today’s students. The restoration work will focus on maintaining the architectural and cultural identity of these schools while introducing improved facilities.
Among the selected institutions, seven century-old schools in Cuttack district will be brought under the restoration programme. These include Peary Mohan Academy, Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Ranihat High School, Bhakta Madhu Vidyapitha, Kazibazar Girls’ High School, Mohan Subudhi High School, and B.K. Bidyapitha.
The Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation (OBCC) has been assigned responsibility for executing the project. Surveys of the selected schools have been completed, and detailed project reports are being prepared to guide conservation and development work.
The restoration plan includes strengthening heritage buildings, improving classrooms, upgrading basic amenities, developing playgrounds, and creating additional facilities to support a better learning environment. The focus will remain on preserving the historic character of these institutions while making them safer and more functional.
Officials and school authorities have highlighted that these institutions represent more than just educational centres — they are part of Odisha’s social and cultural history. Reviving them will help preserve the memories, achievements, and contributions of generations of students and teachers.
The Heritage School Scheme is expected to create a balance between heritage conservation and modern education, ensuring that these iconic institutions continue to inspire future generations while carrying forward their rich legacy.
