Bhubaneswar, Aug 1 (UDN): Odisha has strengthened its relief operations for animals affected by floods, with nearly 4.89 lakh livestock impacted across nine districts as authorities continue efforts to provide medical care, rescue support and essential supplies.
The floods have affected 45 blocks, 398 gram panchayats and 1,341 villages, creating challenges for thousands of livestock owners whose livelihoods depend on cattle, poultry and other animals.
Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik said dedicated measures are being taken to ensure that affected animals receive timely treatment and adequate support. The affected livestock includes 3.11 lakh large animals, 1.77 lakh small animals and over 2.33 lakh poultry birds.
The department has deployed 58 veterinary rapid response teams and organised health camps across flood-affected areas. So far, thousands of animals have received medical assistance, while animal feed and fodder supplies are being distributed to support farmers and livestock owners.
A dedicated 1962 veterinary helpline has also been activated to provide emergency assistance and guidance to people facing difficulties in caring for their animals.
As part of preparedness measures, more than 6.46 lakh animals were vaccinated before the floods, while additional vaccination drives are continuing in affected regions. Authorities are also ensuring the availability of cattle feed, green fodder and other essential resources.
With continuous monitoring and field-level support, Odisha’s animal care teams are working to reduce losses and help communities recover from the impact of the floods.
