Active Monsoon to Keep Odisha Wet for Next Five Days; IMD Issues Rain and Thunderstorm Alerts

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 02 (UDN): The southwest monsoon has regained strength over Odisha, bringing another spell of widespread rainfall across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, over the next five days and issued weather alerts for several districts.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the active monsoon conditions are expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated locations, with residents advised to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity.

Yellow warning for multiple districts

For Sunday, the IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for 23 districts, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall.

Districts likely to witness heavy showers include Bargarh, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur and Nayagarh.

The weather office has urged people, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant as heavy downpours could lead to localized waterlogging and disrupt normal life.

Alert extended for Monday

The warning has been expanded for Monday, with 25 districts expected to experience thunderstorms and rain.

Heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, where local authorities have been advised to keep a close watch on the evolving weather conditions.

Public advised to stay cautious

The IMD has cautioned commuters to exercise care while travelling, as heavy rain may reduce visibility and inundate roads in urban as well as low-lying areas. People have also been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or venturing into open spaces during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning.

With the monsoon expected to remain active through the coming days, the weather department has urged residents to stay updated with official forecasts and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety.
