NIT Rourkela Students Build Smart Helmet and AI-Enabled Drone to Tackle Road Safety, Solar Maintenance

Rourkela, Aug. 02 (UDN): Students of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela have developed two innovative technologies—a sensor-equipped smart helmet and an intelligent drone for cleaning solar panels—that could offer practical solutions for road safety and renewable energy maintenance.

The projects, developed by a team of young innovators, focus on addressing real-world challenges through affordable automation. According to institute officials, the innovations have also received support under a Central Government programme, highlighting their potential for wider adoption.

Smart helmet designed to prevent accidents

Among the standout innovations is a smart helmet embedded with three sensors that monitor the movement of nearby vehicles and alert riders to potential hazards.

The system activates an audible warning whenever another vehicle comes dangerously close, giving riders valuable time to react and avoid possible collisions. It also issues alerts when the rider is travelling at excessive speeds, encouraging safer driving habits.

The prototype has entered the final phase of development and is expected to undergo additional testing before it is considered for practical deployment.

Drone automates solar panel cleaning

The student team has also developed a drone-assisted system capable of inspecting and cleaning rooftop solar panels without manual intervention.

Equipped with intelligent sensors, the drone collects information on dust accumulation, humidity and temperature before analysing whether cleaning is required. If the system determines that panel efficiency is being affected by dust or debris, the drone can automatically carry out the cleaning operation.

The technology is expected to reduce maintenance costs while helping solar panels operate at optimal efficiency.

“Solar panels installed on rooftops often accumulate dust, reducing their efficiency. Since regular cleaning is difficult, our drone first gathers data such as dust levels, humidity and temperature. It then analyses the information and decides whether cleaning is necessary before carrying out the task automatically,” said student innovator Pragyan Priyadarshini.

Innovation earns patent recognition

Commending the students’ work, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Pankaj Sa, said the drone stands out because of its ability to assess not just the amount of dust, but also the type of dirt and the level of cleaning required before beginning the operation.

“The most remarkable aspect of this innovation is its ability to analyse the nature and quantity of dust before deciding how much cleaning is needed. It is an intelligent and efficient solution, and several additional features have also been incorporated into the project,” he said.

Professor Sa added that the drone-based technology has already been granted a patent by the Government of India, marking a significant achievement for the student research team.

The twin innovations underscore NIT Rourkela’s growing emphasis on technology-driven solutions that address everyday challenges while contributing to safer transportation and more efficient renewable energy systems.
