Nabarangpur: Sept 2 [UDN}: Nabarangpur District Collector Dr. Maheswar Swain attended the programme as the chief guest and said that sports can play an important role in developing the personality and character of students and athletes. Social worker Sushil Jain, who attended as a distinguished guest, said that sports are essential for maintaining both physical and mental health.
Among the other guests were Anup Patra, secretary of the Koraput District Sports Association and former Ranji cricket selector; Ravi Nayak, secretary of the Jeypore Sub-Divisional Sports Association and joint secretary of the Odisha Olympic Association; and Ramahari Panda, secretary of the Malkangiri District Sports Association. They encouraged the athletes and students through their speeches and paid tribute to legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
Several office-bearers of the Nabarangpur District Sports Association, including vice-president M. Balakrishna Rao, joint secretary Manoj Kumar Patnaik, hockey secretary Durga Prasad Malik, indoor secretary Krishna Patnaik, cricket secretary Ashok Nayak and athletics secretary Jyoti Parichha, were also present. Women’s secretary Eng. Chandana Malik conducted the proceedings.
During the event, senior former sportspersons Purnachandra Bebarta, Kailash Chandra Subuddhi, Nagendra Patnaik and Prakash Tripathy, along with senior sports organiser and hockey secretary Durga Prasad Malik of Umerkote, were felicitated with certificates of honour.
Prahallad Tripathy was also felicitated by the guests for his lifelong contribution to the field of sports. Senior sportspersons Duryodhan Harijan, Anshuman Tripathy, Shashank Shekhar Behera, Lalu Harijan, Sanjay Bej and Firoz Hial were honoured for their contributions to sports in the district.
A large number of students from various colleges and members of the club, along with Shubhendu Behera, Lalu Mishra, Saroj Patnaik, Pipu Patnaik, Sajjad Khan, Sunil Ashish Suna, Kahu Swain, Sachitananda Tripathy, Sabir Beg, Madhusudan Tripathy, Ajit Manbadh, Ramesh Samantaray, Mana Banja, K.J. Rao, Babi Bhushan, Ananta Dhakad, Ajita Das, Gopal Patnaik, G. Chandrasekhar Raja and Puravi Parida, were present at the programme.
