Malkangiri , Oct 9 [UDN}:The Youth Red Cross Unit of Malkangiri College organised a special HIV and AIDS awareness programme on the college campus to educate students about HIV infection, prevention and the need to eliminate social discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
The programme was inaugurated by College Principal Dr Chittaranjan Barik, who attended as the chairperson, along with Chief Medical Officer Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra as the chief guest. They formally inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
District Youth Red Cross Convenor Lecturer Bipleswar Pidisika coordinated the programme and conducted the proceedings. Former District Youth Red Cross Convenor Ranjan Kumar Swain, along with lecturers Premarekha Bhatra, Deeptirekha Mishra and Pramaya Kumar Mohanty, among others, were present.
Addressing the awareness meeting, the speakers discussed the causes and modes of prevention of HIV infection and stressed the importance of eliminating stigma and discrimination against people affected by HIV/AIDS. They highlighted the significant role of young people in spreading accurate information and creating greater awareness about HIV/AIDS in society.
A quiz and debate competition were also organised for students as part of the programme. A large number of students participated in both competitions. Students securing first, second and third positions were awarded certificates of merit.
Lecturer Bijayalakshmi Sethi and Lecturer Akash Padiami served as judges for the competitions and completed the evaluation process. The programme concluded with a formal closing ceremony.
