Authorities Tighten Surveillance at Pharmacies, Making CCTV Installation Compulsory at All Medical Shops to Check Prescription-Free Medicine Sales and Promote Responsible Drug Dispensing

Bhubaneswar,  Oct 12 [UDN}:The Central Government has made CCTV cameras mandatory at all medical shops across the country as part of efforts to prevent the sale of medicines without valid prescriptions.

A notification in this regard was reportedly issued on September 8, with the new requirement aimed particularly at monitoring the dispensing of Schedule H, H1 and X medicines, which are subject to prescription-related restrictions.

The CCTV footage will help authorities monitor whether shopkeepers are supplying prescription medicines without prescriptions and to whom such medicines are being sold. The move is intended to strengthen surveillance and ensure compliance with drug-sale regulations.

According to a survey cited in the report, around 64 per cent of medicine retailers in the country do not ask customers for prescriptions, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring of pharmacies.

The mandatory CCTV system is therefore being viewed as an important step towards curbing the unauthorised sale and misuse of prescription medicines and improving accountability among medicine retailers.
