9th December 2024: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is set to begin repair work on the Ratna Bhandar of Srimandir in Puri from December 16, according to ASI Superintendent DB Garnaik. The proposed repairs have been approved by the temple’s Niti sub-committee, and work will begin once the schedule is finalized.
The Ratna Bhandar, a crucial part of the 12th-century Srimandir, is the temple’s treasure house, where priceless jewelry, ornaments, and sacred items are stored. The Ratna Bhandar is located inside the temple complex and is known for housing the “Ratna” or jewels dedicated to Lord Jagannath, which are believed to be of immense religious and historical significance.
Earlier, the ASI conducted a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey on the Ratna Bhandar with the help of the National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad. The findings from the survey, submitted last month, have informed the repair plans, which will be executed with the approval of the temple management.
The repair work will ensure the safety and preservation of the Ratna Bhandar, which is vital for storing the temple’s treasures. The issue of the Ratna Bhandar’s repair will be discussed at the upcoming Chhatisha Nijog meeting on December 10.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan also mentioned that the state government is working to complete the inventory of the jewelry and ornaments stored in two temporary treasuries within the shrine by the end of January. Once the repairs are completed, the valuable items will be returned to the Ratna Bhandar, where the inventory process will continue under strict supervision.
