ICAR-CIFA Hosts Successful Fish Harvest Fair to Promote Aquaculture Awareness

Bhubaneswar, April 5 – The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), through its Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), recently hosted a Fish Harvest Fair, aimed at promoting public awareness about the institute’s activities and highlighting the health benefits of regular fish consumption.

The event attracted significant attention, with over 400 visitors attending the fair to purchase fresh, live fish harvested directly from the institute’s ponds. A total of 11 varieties of live fish were displayed and sold at subsidized prices, ensuring maximum freshness and quality for the consumers.

One of the key highlights of the event was the display of ICAR-CIFA’s advanced fish production technologies, particularly in the field of diversified aquaculture. Visitors expressed appreciation for the institute’s efforts in promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.

In addition to the fair, ICAR-CIFA also hosted nearly 1,000 school students from over 20 schools in Bhubaneswar, Puri, and surrounding areas. The aim was to familiarize students with freshwater aquaculture and its significance in food security, livelihood generation, and environmental sustainability. The students participated in a series of engaging activities, including live fish harvest demonstrations, documentary screenings, an exhibition of fish species, and a drone demonstration. The exhibition also featured 25 aquariums showcasing the rich biodiversity of freshwater fish.

Overall, the event successfully fostered greater awareness about freshwater aquaculture, encouraging both the public and students to explore the vital role of fish farming in sustainable food production.
