NTPC Talcher Kaniha, a Super Thermal Power Station with a capacity of 3010 MW in Odisha, has achieved a significant environmental milestone by reaching 100% ash utilization as of March 20, 2025. This accomplishment reflects the station’s commitment to sustainability and adheres to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) guidelines for ash utilization.

AK Sehgal, Executive Director of NTPC Talcher Kaniha, expressed his pride in the achievement, highlighting the station’s role in supporting national infrastructure projects. The station has been supplying fly ash for a variety of uses, including road construction, soil conservation, and the manufacturing of ash-based products. These efforts help reduce environmental impact while maximizing the potential of ash for numerous applications.

NTPC Talcher Kaniha’s fly ash has supported key road projects in Odisha, including the Cuttack-Angul (NH55), Duburi-Chandikol-Balasor (NH53), and Khordha Bypass (NH57), as well as projects led by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). In the current financial year, the station utilized 67 LMT (Lakh Metric Tons) of ash, marking a 43.2% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, 45% of this ash was used for non-dyke applications, further reducing reliance on ash ponds.

This milestone was achieved through the combined efforts of NTPC Talcher Kaniha, NHAI, the Odisha Government, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). Looking forward, the station plans to expand its utilization of fly ash in the construction and cement industries and is also exploring opportunities to export high-quality ash to neighboring countries, further enhancing its environmental impact and supporting national infrastructure development.
