CUO Opens Germplasm Plot in Koraput to Focus on Traditional Farming and Preserve Indigenous Crops

Koraput, Nov 15: The Central University of Odisha (CUO), Koraput, has inaugurated a germplasm conservation plot at its Landiguda campus to focus on traditional farming practices by preserving indigenous crop varieties. The initiative aims to study and conserve local crops and explore their potential for reintroduction into modern agriculture.

CUO Vice-Chancellor Dr. Chakradhar Tripathi, who launched the plot, stressed the urgent need to revive traditional farming practices that are being overshadowed by modern, non-native varieties. “Our traditional farming practices are not only vital for food security but are deeply connected to our cultural heritage. Preserving these indigenous crops will promote health, sustainability, and agricultural diversity,” he stated.

The germplasm plot will conserve 104 varieties of indigenous rice, 87 types of finger millet, 30 species of local Niger, and other traditional crops such as little millet, foxtail millet, maize, and wild yam. These crops are integral to India’s agrarian heritage and will be studied for their potential reintroduction to enhance agricultural practices and strengthen food security.

Dr. Tripathi expressed confidence that CUO’s efforts would position the university as a leading institution in the field of traditional farming and crop conservation, contributing to the long-term preservation of India’s rich agricultural biodiversity and promoting sustainable farming solutions.
