On World Cancer Day, February 4, Apollo Cancer Centres in Bhubaneswar launched the ‘Unify to Notify’ campaign, urging the Government of India to classify cancer as a notifiable disease. This initiative, supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and State Oncology Associations, aims to improve cancer care, research, and resource allocation across the country.

Alok Srivastava, COO of Apollo Hospitals, highlighted that making cancer a notifiable disease would help track cancer trends and optimize resource distribution. IMA Secretary Pratyush Ray emphasized how mandatory reporting would strengthen India’s cancer surveillance system, while ICMR’s Jyotirmayee Turuk stressed its role in guiding prevention strategies and research funding.

With over 14 lakh new cancer cases reported annually, the campaign calls for real-time cancer data collection to enhance detection and improve patient outcomes. While 15 states have already adopted this practice, nationwide implementation is crucial for better cancer care.

World Cancer Day 2025 also introduced the theme “United by Unique,” focusing on personalized cancer care and encouraging innovative ways to support those affected by cancer.
