Sambalpur: Oct 3 [UDN}:The country’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) was inaugurated in Sambalpur, marking a significant addition to India’s weather-monitoring infrastructure. The “Make in India” Doppler radar, installed in Sambalpur, will strengthen real-time monitoring of weather systems and improve forecasting capabilities across a large part of Odisha.
The Sambalpur radar holds special regional significance, as it will bring a wider area of Odisha under the state’s advanced weather surveillance and forecasting network. The facility is expected to provide important meteorological data for tracking rainfall, thunderstorms, cyclonic systems and other severe weather events.
With the commissioning of the Sambalpur facility, Odisha now has three Doppler Weather Radars, following the existing installations at Paradip and Gopalpur.
The new radar is expected to strengthen the state’s preparedness for extreme weather events by enabling more effective monitoring and timely weather alerts, particularly across western and central Odisha.
