Rayagada, Aug. 21 (UDN): At least eight labourers were seriously injured after a pickup van carrying around 25 workers overturned near Talana Ghat under Putasing police limits in Odisha’s Rayagada district on Friday.
According to preliminary reports, the labourers were travelling from Sagada village to Dokashikala under Padmapur block to work in paddy transplantation when the accident occurred.
Driver allegedly lost control
The accident reportedly took place after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the stretch near Talana Ghat. The pickup van overturned, leaving several passengers injured.
Around 10 other labourers are also reported to have sustained injuries in the mishap.
Rescue operation launched
Soon after receiving information, personnel from the Putasing Police and Gunupur Fire Service reached the spot and launched a rescue operation.
The injured labourers were pulled out of the vehicle and initially provided first aid. Those in critical condition were subsequently shifted to hospitals in Gunupur, Paralakhemundi and Rayagada for further treatment.
Local residents said all the occupants of the vehicle were labourers from Sagada village who were travelling for seasonal agricultural work.
Police begin investigation
Police have seized the pickup van and initiated an investigation into the accident. Authorities are examining the circumstances leading to the mishap, including the driver’s alleged loss of control.
