MalkangiriJuly 21 [UDN}:: A unique Rath Yatra at Shraddha Shabari Srikhetra in Mathili, Malkangiri district, has become a symbol of tribal unity, social equality, and brotherhood, creating a new chapter in Odisha’s cultural history.
Unlike traditional Rath Yatra celebrations, this year’s festival showcased a remarkable effort to eliminate caste barriers. The entire religious ceremony was conducted by members of the tribal community, believed to be descendants of Shabara King Biswabasu, the legendary first worshipper of Lord Jagannath.
The initiative was inspired and guided by Malkangiri Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Somanath Pradhan, whose efforts helped transform this vision into reality.
One of the most emotional highlights of the festival was the active participation of various tribal communities. Under the guidance of Padma Shri Baba Balia, tribal representatives Narasimha Dalapati and Jagannath Perema performed the sacred rituals on the chariot after learning Vedic traditions.
Adding to the significance, the grandson of freedom fighter Shaheed Laxman Nayak performed the traditional Chhera Pahanra ritual, winning the admiration of devotees.
Members of the Bonda, Koya, Duruwa, Konda Dora, Banjara, Bhumia, and Paraja tribes came together, presenting their traditional dances and music in devotion to Lord Jagannath. Tribal leaders, including community president Bandhu Muduli, joined the celebrations and witnessed the historic occasion from the chariot.
The chariot procession moved to the rhythm of traditional tribal drums and dances. Named after Mata Shabari, who is believed to have offered fruits to Lord Rama, Shraddha Shabari Srikhetra featured South Odisha’s tallest Rath, drawing thousands of devotees from within and outside the district.
The organisers have already begun preparations to celebrate the upcoming Bahuda Yatra on a grand scale. Police ensured smooth security arrangements, while the temple committee served Mahaprasad to thousands of devotees throughout the festival.
