Nabarangpur, Sept 7 [UDN}: District Road Safety Committee Meeting Held . Emphasis on Reducing Road Accidents and Achieving the Goal of Zero Fatalities.
With the objective of reducing road accidents in Nabarangpur district and ensuring safe transportation for the general public, an important meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held today, September 3, 2026, under the chairmanship of District Collector and District Magistrate Dr. Maheshwar Swain.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on various road safety-related issues in the district, identification of accident-prone locations, preventive measures to reduce accidents, strict enforcement of traffic rules, and improvement of road infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Nabarangpur Sub-Collector Prakash Kumar Mishra, Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer Dr. Prafulla Padhi, Regional Transport Officer Swaha Hembram, DSP (Road Safety), Superintending Engineer of the Works Department, Executive Officer of the Municipality, Tahasildar of Papadahandi, Assistant Executive Engineer of the Umerkote Works Sub-Division, Deputy Manager of NHAI, Assistant Executive Engineer of the Nabarangpur NH Sub-Division, Additional District Education Officer, representatives of the District Bus Association, and media representatives.
The meeting discussed the major causes of road accidents on various roads across the district and the necessary remedial measures required at accident-prone locations. The concerned departments were instructed to immediately identify weak and vulnerable stretches of roads and undertake necessary repairs, improve traffic management, install road safety signage, introduce speed-control measures, and take other essential preventive steps.
The District Collector emphasized the need for better coordination among different departments to reduce road accidents and directed all concerned authorities to take immediate action at their respective departmental levels. Special emphasis was placed on strengthening road safety arrangements at accident-prone locations, and the concerned road construction and maintenance agencies were instructed to take appropriate measures.
As per the directions of the Transport Commissioner, the first week of every month from September 2026 to March 2027 will be observed as “Zero Fatality Week.” In this context, the meeting held a detailed discussion on the “Zero Fatality Week” Action Plan prepared specifically for Nabarangpur district.
To ensure the successful implementation of the campaign, the Nabarangpur NH Sub-Division and all other road construction and maintenance agencies were directed to introduce necessary speed-calming measures at accident-prone and sensitive locations. They were also instructed to install required road signage and warning indicators at such locations.
The Police and Transport Departments were further directed to conduct regular and stringent checks against traffic rule violators and take strong enforcement action in accordance with the law. Special emphasis was placed on regular enforcement drives against offences such as overspeeding, failure to wear helmets and seat belts, drunken driving, and other violations of traffic regulations.
It was also observed during the meeting that road safety is not the responsibility of government departments alone; the cooperation and active participation of every citizen are equally essential. Members of the public were urged to strictly follow traffic rules, drive vehicles responsibly and cautiously, and remain conscious of the safety of other road users.
The primary objective of the meeting was to ensure the coordinated implementation of the “Zero Fatality Week” campaign and bring road accidents and accident-related deaths in Nabarangpur district to the minimum possible level, while establishing a safer and more secure road transportation system for all citizens.
