Kendrapara, July 3 (UDN): Large-scale illegal prawn farming activities in Kendrapara district have raised serious concerns over environmental damage, water pollution, and potential health risks, particularly in areas close to the ecologically sensitive Bhitarkanika region.
According to reports, thousands of unauthorised prawn enclosures have been set up on government land along the banks of the Brahmani, Baitarani, and Kharasrota rivers, especially in parts of Rajkanika block. These structures are reportedly operating without regulatory approval and in violation of environmental norms.
Environmental concerns have intensified due to the suspected discharge of untreated wastewater containing chemicals and fertilisers into nearby rivers, canals, and agricultural fields. This has led to water contamination, land degradation, and disruption of local farming activities.
Experts and local stakeholders warn that the unchecked expansion of these illegal aquaculture units could have long-term consequences for the fragile Bhitarkanika ecosystem, which is already vulnerable due to ecological pressures.
The situation has also raised concerns about public health risks, as polluted water sources may impact communities dependent on these water bodies for daily use and livelihood activities.
Authorities are being urged to take strict action against encroachments and enforce environmental regulations to protect both the ecosystem and public health in the region.
