Bhubaneswar Takes a Step Towards Cleaner City with New Bio-Gas Plant at Meherpalli

Bhubaneswar, Aug 12: Bhubaneswar is moving towards a more sustainable way of managing its waste with a new 300-tonne-per-day Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant being developed at Meherpalli.

The ₹175-crore project, being taken up by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in partnership with Oil India Limited, will give the city’s wet waste a new purpose by converting it into clean, renewable fuel.

Instead of treating organic waste simply as something to be thrown away, the facility will process segregated wet waste to produce compressed bio-gas, along with organic manure and bio-fertiliser. Commercial production is expected to begin by April 2027.

For a growing city like Bhubaneswar, managing everyday household and commercial waste is an increasing challenge. The new facility is expected to help address that challenge by creating a system in which waste can be processed, reused and turned into useful products.

The CBG produced at the plant will provide a renewable alternative to conventional fuels, while the organic manure and bio-fertiliser generated during the process can support soil health and more sustainable farming practices.

The project also reflects a broader shift in how cities are approaching waste management. Rather than relying only on disposal, urban authorities are increasingly looking at ways to recover resources from waste and reduce the environmental impact of growing urban populations.

The partnership between BMC and Oil India Limited is expected to bring together local waste-management experience and energy-sector expertise to establish the facility.

Once operational, the Meherpalli plant is expected to strengthen Bhubaneswar’s waste-processing capacity and contribute to cleaner surroundings, renewable energy generation and a more circular urban economy.

With commercial production targeted for April 2027, the project represents a long-term investment in the city’s future—where the waste generated by homes and businesses can be transformed into energy and useful agricultural products.
