Big EPF Update: Government Proposes Raising Monthly Salary Ceiling to Rs 25,000 from Existing Rs 15,000 Limit

Delhi, Sept 19 [UDN}:The Modi government has taken a major step concerning the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), with a proposal to increase the existing salary ceiling for mandatory EPF coverage from ₹15,000 per month to ₹25,000 per month. The proposed change is expected to bring a larger number of salaried employees within the ambit of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and expand the social-security coverage available to workers in the organised sector.

At present, the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPF membership is ₹15,000 per month. Under the proposed revision, this limit would be raised to ₹25,000 per month. If implemented, employees earning salaries up to the revised ceiling could become eligible for mandatory EPF coverage, subject to the applicable rules and conditions.

The move is being viewed as a significant step towards widening retirement and social-security protection for employees. EPF is an important savings mechanism for salaried workers, as contributions made during employment accumulate over the course of their careers and can provide financial support after retirement or in other circumstances permitted under EPFO rules.

The proposed increase in the wage ceiling would particularly benefit employees whose salaries have risen beyond the existing ₹15,000 threshold but remain within the proposed ₹25,000 limit. Such workers could potentially gain access to the EPF framework, allowing them to build long-term retirement savings through regular contributions.

The proposed revision also comes against the backdrop of changing wage structures and rising living costs. With salaries having increased over the years, the existing wage ceiling has often been discussed in the context of expanding formal social-security coverage. Raising the limit to ₹25,000 would represent a substantial increase over the existing threshold and could bring more workers under the EPF system.

The EPF system generally involves contributions from both the employee and the employer, with the applicable contribution being governed by EPFO rules. The accumulated corpus earns interest as declared for the relevant financial year, helping employees build a long-term financial reserve.

However, the exact impact of the proposed change on employees, employers and contribution calculations would depend on the final government notification and detailed rules issued for implementation. Therefore, employees should refer to the official EPFO or government notification for the precise provisions once the decision is formally notified.

If implemented, the increase in the EPF salary ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 could mark an important expansion of formal-sector social-security coverage and provide greater opportunities for eligible workers to accumulate retirement savings over their working years.
