Jajpur, Aug. 1 (UDN): The body of a 52-year-old man who was dragged into the Kharasrota River by a crocodile earlier this week was recovered on Saturday, bringing an end to a three-day search operation in Odisha’s Jajpur district.
The deceased, Harihar Jena, was a resident of Rishipur village under Chhatishdebila Panchayat in Jajpur block.
According to officials, Jena was sitting on the riverbank on July 28 when a crocodile suddenly emerged from the water, attacked him and dragged him into the river before nearby residents could intervene.
Following the incident, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, local administration and other agencies launched an extensive search operation. His body was eventually recovered from Madhusudanpur Ghat, several kilometres from the site of the attack.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, while local authorities have initiated further formalities.
The incident has once again raised concerns among people living along the Kharasrota River, where crocodile sightings and occasional attacks have been reported in recent years.
Forest officials have reiterated their appeal to residents to avoid venturing close to rivers and other water bodies during the monsoon season, when crocodiles are generally more active due to rising water levels and changing river conditions. Authorities have also urged people to remain vigilant and immediately report crocodile sightings to the Forest Department to prevent further mishaps.
