Ganjam, July 5 (UDN): Burglars allegedly decamped with around 300 grams of gold ornaments and over eight kilograms of silver jewellery from a jewellery shop in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said on Saturday.

The burglary took place at Raja Jewellers in Bengasar village under the jurisdiction of Tarasingi Police Station. However, the theft came to light only after the shop owner reopened the establishment following a two-day closure.
According to police, the shop owner had been away from the village for personal reasons and had kept the shop closed. On returning, he found the jewellery missing and immediately alerted the police after checking the CCTV footage installed inside the shop.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the burglars did not break open the main entrance. Instead, they allegedly gained access to the shop through the terrace and entered the premises using the staircase. CCTV footage reportedly showed two masked miscreants moving around the shop, searching the premises before packing the gold and silver ornaments into a bag and fleeing the scene.
On receiving information, police reached the spot and launched an investigation. A scientific team inspected the crime scene, while CCTV footage has been seized for analysis to identify the culprits.
Police have detained one person for questioning in connection with the burglary. However, officials said his role is being verified and further investigation is underway to ascertain whether others were involved in the crime.
Bhanjanagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dipak Kumar Mishra visited the jewellery shop and reviewed the progress of the investigation. Police teams have intensified efforts to trace the accused and recover the stolen valuables.
The value of the stolen ornaments is yet to be officially assessed.
