Bhubaneswar, October 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27, potentially bringing heavy rainfall to several districts of Odisha.

Cyclone Development Timeline
According to the IMD, the weather disturbance is expected to become a well-marked low-pressure system by October 25. It may strengthen into a depression on October 26, a deep depression later that night, and possibly a cyclone by the morning of October 27.
At present, the system is moving slowly northwestwards at a speed of around 3 km per hour, gathering strength as it draws energy from the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists say that sea surface temperature, wind shear, and moisture levels are favourable for further intensification.
Path and Landfall Still Uncertain
While the system continues to evolve, the exact trajectory and landfall point are yet to be determined. “It is premature to predict the landfall location, but Odisha’s southern and coastal districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy rain from October 27 onwards,” an IMD official said.
The department is closely monitoring the system’s movement and will issue updates as more data becomes available.
Heavy Rainfall Likely Across Odisha
From October 27 to 29, widespread rainfall is expected in many parts of Odisha. Coastal and southern districts, including Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, and Nayagarh, are likely to experience moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Although wind speeds are expected to remain moderate initially, fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions developing in the Bay of Bengal.
Weather Conditions in Bhubaneswar
In Bhubaneswar, the weather is likely to remain partly cloudy on Friday with early morning fog. The maximum temperature may stay around 35°C, while the minimum could be around 24°C, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.
Officials added that an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea, which is expected to trigger the formation of the low-pressure area.
Five-Day Forecast and Precautions
The IMD has predicted intermittent rainfall across Odisha for the next five days. On October 27, certain districts may experience very heavy rainfall, raising the risk of localized flooding in low-lying regions.
The state administration has been advised to stay prepared for emergency response operations, particularly in coastal and southern Odisha. Residents have been urged to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow safety guidelines.
A developing low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclone by October 27, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to several districts of Odisha. While the storm’s path is still uncertain, authorities have urged caution as conditions remain favourable for cyclonic development.
