Bhubaneswar, Sept. 22 (UDN): Odisha is bracing for another spell of intense rainfall as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen into a deep depression on Tuesday, raising the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rain across several districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system was located around 220 km southeast of Gopalpur and nearly 320 km east of Visakhapatnam. It is likely to move towards the Odisha coast and cross between Wednesday night and the early hours of September 24.
The strengthening weather system has prompted authorities to step up preparedness, particularly in southern and coastal districts.
Red Alert For Multiple Districts
The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha, with red warnings issued for several districts over the next two days.
For September 23, Ganjam, Gajapati and Koraput are under a red warning for very heavy rainfall. On September 24, the red warning is in place for Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur.
Several other districts have also been placed under orange and yellow warnings as the system moves closer to the coast.
Rainfall To Intensify
Rainfall activity is expected to increase significantly on September 23 and 24 as the deep depression approaches the Odisha coast. Southern Odisha is likely to experience some of the heaviest rainfall during this period, although the weather system could affect a wider area.
The IMD has also warned of strong winds associated with the system. Wind speeds could reach 55-65 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 75 kmph in affected areas.
Administration On Alert
District administrations in vulnerable areas have been asked to closely monitor the situation and ensure that emergency response arrangements are in place.
Authorities are particularly keeping watch over low-lying areas, rivers, drainage systems and other vulnerable locations where heavy rainfall could trigger waterlogging or flooding.
With the system expected to strengthen further and move closer to the Odisha coast, residents in the affected districts have been advised to remain alert and follow weather advisories issued by the authorities.
