Bhubaneswar, June 16 (UDN): In view of the potential impact of El Niño conditions on rainfall and agricultural activities, the Odisha government has constituted a dedicated task force to safeguard the state’s water resources and irrigation infrastructure.

The task force will monitor reservoir levels, irrigation networks, groundwater availability, and drinking water supply systems across districts. It has been tasked with preparing contingency plans to ensure efficient water management and minimize the adverse effects of any rainfall deficit during the upcoming agricultural season.

Officials from the Water Resources Department, Agriculture Department, Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), and other concerned agencies will work in close coordination to assess emerging challenges and implement preventive measures.

The state government has directed all district administrations to remain vigilant and undertake advance planning for water conservation, irrigation scheduling, and drought mitigation. Special emphasis will be placed on ensuring uninterrupted water supply for drinking and farming purposes.

Experts have warned that El Niño conditions could influence monsoon patterns, potentially affecting agricultural productivity. In response, Odisha has adopted a proactive approach to strengthen preparedness and protect farmers’ interests.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring water security and maintaining the resilience of irrigation systems to safeguard livelihoods and agricultural output across the state.
