Puri, Odisha,3rd July : The much-anticipated Shree Jagannath International Airport project in Puri is now on the verge of receiving its final environmental clearance, marking a transformative moment for air connectivity in eastern Odisha.

Following a policy-level nod from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Odisha government has successfully addressed all the queries raised by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). These clarifications were in response to concerns that emerged during a site inspection conducted by the central team in April.

The proposed airport site, located at Sipasarubali in Brahmagiri Block of Puri district, had drawn environmental and heritage-related scrutiny. Specific apprehensions included the project’s proximity to the sacred Shree Jagannath Temple, the ecologically sensitive Chilika Lake, and the nesting zones of the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. Additionally, potential disruptions to migratory bird patterns and air traffic routes in the region were also examined.

Environmental experts concluded that there was minimal risk to the Shree Jagannath Temple. However, they advised that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) be consulted to ensure cultural heritage is fully protected. Recommendations were also made regarding comprehensive mitigation strategies to safeguard local biodiversity and wildlife habitats.

The Department of Commerce and Transport has now submitted a detailed report addressing all these issues, paving the way for the MoEFCC to grant the final go-ahead. With the project moving closer to approval, Odisha stands at the threshold of a major infrastructural advancement.

The airport is expected to significantly boost tourism, ease travel for pilgrims visiting the iconic Jagannath Temple, and stimulate economic development in the coastal belt. Once operational, the Shree Jagannath International Airport will become a vital node in Odisha’s growing transportation network, enhancing both domestic and international connectivity.
