Hirakud Dam Releases Huge Volume of Water Through 15 Gates; Strong Water Current Reported in the Mahanadi River

Sambalpur: Aug 19 [UDN}:With the water level and inflow into the Hirakud reservoir continuing to rise amid heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, as many as 15 sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam have been opened to release excess water downstream. A large volume of water is being discharged from the reservoir, resulting in a significant increase in the flow of the Mahanadi River.
The authorities have intensified monitoring of the reservoir and downstream areas following the opening of the gates. The controlled release of water is aimed at maintaining the water level of the Hirakud reservoir within a safe limit and preventing excessive pressure on the dam system.
The substantial discharge from Hirakud has led to a rapid strengthening of the current in the Mahanadi and its downstream channels. People living in low-lying areas along the riverbanks have been advised to remain alert and exercise caution, particularly near river ghats, embankments and other vulnerable locations.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation and assessing the impact of the increased water flow in downstream areas. Local administrations have also been asked to remain prepared for any possible rise in river levels and to take precautionary measures wherever necessary.
The opening of the 15 gates and the large-scale release of water have therefore raised concerns in several downstream areas, as the intensified Mahanadi flow could affect low-lying regions if water levels continue to rise. Authorities are keeping a close watch on rainfall, inflow and outflow conditions to ensure that the situation remains under control.
