Bhubaneswar, Sept 21 [UDN}: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to begin its withdrawal from the country from September 19, with the process expected to start from western Rajasthan.
According to the weather department, atmospheric conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of the monsoon withdrawal process. After retreating from western Rajasthan, the monsoon is expected to gradually withdraw from other parts of northwest India.
If the withdrawal begins as forecast, the southwest monsoon could completely retreat from Odisha by the second week of October. Normally, the monsoon withdraws completely from the state by around October 15. The weakening of monsoon activity in Odisha generally begins towards the last week of September.
However, the IMD has not yet issued a specific date for the complete withdrawal of the monsoon from Odisha.
Meanwhile, the possibility of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has raised concerns about further rainfall in the state. Weather conditions are therefore expected to remain active over Odisha for the next few days, with rainfall likely in several areas before the monsoon finally begins its retreat.
The developments will be closely monitored as the monsoon transitions from the rainy season towards the post-monsoon phase.
