June Records 46 Percent Less Rain Than Normal as Monsoon Activity Intensifies, Leaving Farmers Worried About the Future of Kharif Crops

Bhubaneswar, June 23 {UDN}:  The southwest monsoon has become active once again, bringing renewed hope for farmers and easing concerns over the prolonged dry spell in several regions. However, despite the recent improvement in weather conditions, the rainfall situation during June remains alarming. According to available data, the state has recorded a 46 percent deficit in rainfall during the month of June, which is significantly below the seasonal average.

The shortage of rainfall has already begun to impact Kharif cultivation, the most important agricultural season for farmers. Delayed and inadequate rains have affected land preparation, sowing activities, and the transplantation of paddy crops in many districts. Farmers who depend heavily on monsoon rains for irrigation have been facing considerable challenges due to the prolonged dry conditions.

Agricultural experts warn that if rainfall does not improve consistently in the coming weeks, the deficit could adversely affect crop growth, productivity, and overall agricultural output. Water levels in reservoirs, ponds, and other irrigation sources have also remained lower than expected, adding to farmers’ concerns.

With the monsoon becoming active, authorities and farmers alike are hopeful that rainfall will increase in the coming days, helping to restore soil moisture, accelerate farming operations, and minimize further losses. Timely and adequate rainfall during the remaining monsoon season will be crucial for ensuring a successful Kharif crop and safeguarding the livelihoods of millions of farming families.

The weather department has indicated that monsoon activity is likely to strengthen further, which could provide much-needed relief to drought-like conditions in several areas and support agricultural activities across the region.
