Kandhamal, Sept 22 [UDN}:Traffic movement through Kalinga Ghat will remain suspended from September 23 to 24 in view of the heavy rainfall forecast under the influence of the prevailing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The temporary closure has been ordered as a precautionary measure following the possibility of landslides triggered by intense rainfall in the hilly ghat section.
According to the district administration, the decision has been taken keeping in mind the red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall and the associated risk to motorists travelling through the vulnerable stretch. During the two-day period, commuters will be advised to use alternative routes, while regular movement through Kalinga Ghat will remain restricted to ensure public safety.
The administration has also expressed concern over the possibility of flooding in Chikiti and landslides in Patrapur, both of which could be affected by the anticipated spell of heavy rain. Emergency preparedness measures have therefore been strengthened in the vulnerable areas.
Fire Services and ODRAF teams have been kept ready to respond to any emergency, including flooding, landslides, road blockages and rescue operations. The district administration is also maintaining coordination with the Kandhamal district administration to monitor the situation and undertake necessary measures jointly.
Officials have advised residents and travellers to remain alert, avoid unnecessary movement through vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall and follow advisories issued by the district administration.
The temporary closure of Kalinga Ghat is aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of commuters during the period of heightened rainfall and landslide risk.
