Koraput: Sept 19 [UDN}:A long-standing demand of Koraput city residents is now moving towards reality, with the proposed bypass road being planned as a four-lane corridor instead of the earlier two-lane proposal. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the ambitious project has been prepared and submitted to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval.
According to Superintending Engineer Samarjini Sethi, the DPR was submitted to the Ministry on July 30. The project is estimated to cost around ₹806 crore.
The proposed bypass will begin from Mendaguda Chhak near the IRB on NH-26, coming from the Jeypore side. It will pass through areas including Dangdeula, Koraput, Kumbha and Chindri. Near Chindri, the bypass will connect with NH-326 and, after covering approximately 10.1 km, will link back with the NH-26 road towards Sunabeda.
The project also includes provisions for the construction of two railway overbridges (ROBs). One ROB is proposed near Megharaj on the Raniguda road, while another will be constructed near Chindri. Discussions regarding the railway-related aspects of the project have reportedly already been held with the concerned railway authorities.
Once completed, the bypass is expected to significantly reduce the movement of heavy vehicles through Koraput town, thereby easing traffic congestion and making transportation through the city smoother and more convenient.
The project is currently awaiting DPR approval. Once the proposal receives the necessary sanction, further work on the bypass project is expected to move ahead.
