Most Parts of Odisha Lie in Earthquake Risk Zone; Authorities Urge Improved Preparedness and Public Awareness

Bhubaneswar, June 29 {UDN}:  Most districts of Odisha fall under earthquake-prone zones, highlighting the need for greater disaster preparedness and public awareness. According to the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), as many as 16 districts, including Cuttack, Khordha, and Puri, are classified under Seismic Zone III, which is considered a moderate earthquake risk zone. While the state is not among India’s highest-risk seismic regions, experts caution that moderate-intensity earthquakes can still cause significant damage, particularly in densely populated urban areas and in buildings that do not follow earthquake-resistant construction standards.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain aware of earthquake safety measures, including identifying safe evacuation points, securing heavy furniture, and following official advisories during seismic events. Disaster management agencies continue to strengthen preparedness through awareness campaigns, mock drills, and improved emergency response systems. Officials also stress the importance of adhering to earthquake-resistant building codes in new construction to minimize the impact of future tremors and enhance public safety across the state.
