Nabarangpur, June 29 (UDN): In a tragic incident, a mother and her daughter were killed after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm in Ninasapani village under Mundibeda panchayat within Raighar police limits of Nabarangpur district on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Daimati Muduli and her daughter Champa Muduli. According to local sources, the duo had ventured to a nearby area, around 200 metres from their residence, to collect Kusum leaves when heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms lashed the region.

While taking shelter near a tree during the downpour, the two were struck by a lightning bolt, resulting in their instantaneous death, villagers said.

Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing a loud thunderclap and found the mother and daughter lying motionless. The incident soon spread across the village, casting a pall of gloom over the area.

Champa Muduli was working as a child care assistant at a local school. Her untimely death, along with that of her mother, has left the entire community in deep shock and mourning.

Daimati Muduli is survived by two sons and another daughter. Villagers expressed concern over the family’s financial condition and urged the administration to provide immediate assistance to the bereaved family.

On being informed, Raighar police reached the village, registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by lightning strikes during the monsoon season, prompting authorities to advise people to avoid venturing outdoors or taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
