Nabarangpur, Aug 5 [UDN}: Nabarangpur district has launched a 15-day Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC) from August 4 to August 18, 2026, under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) and the Odisha Government’s Health and Family Welfare Department. The campaign aims to support the vision of a “Leprosy-Free Odisha” by identifying hidden cases through door-to-door screening and ensuring immediate treatment.
The campaign will cover all eight blocks of the district. Around 2,11,643 households, comprising nearly 9,45,397 people, will be screened. A trained workforce of 1,480 ASHA workers, 300 MPHWs, 125 Community Health Officers (CHOs), 26 Health Supervisors, 70 MBBS doctors, and 46 AYUSH doctors has been deployed. All personnel have received special training in leprosy detection and management.
Health workers will examine residents for symptoms such as numb white or copper-colored skin patches, abnormal skin changes, and numbness in the hands or feet. Suspected patients will be examined by MBBS doctors, and those diagnosed with leprosy will receive free Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) from the government. With regular treatment, the disease can be completely cured within 6 to 12 months.
Special screening teams will also visit schools and Anganwadi centres to detect leprosy among children at an early stage. While India aims to eliminate leprosy by 2027, Nabarangpur district has set a target of reducing the number of child leprosy cases to zero.
According to district records, 6,133 leprosy patients have been identified so far, of whom 5,936 have recovered, while 197 patients are currently undergoing treatment.
Joint Public Grievance Hearing Held in Nabarangpur
A Joint Public Grievance Hearing Camp was held at the Zilla Parishad Conference Hall in Nabarangpur under the joint chairmanship of District Collector Dr. Maheshwar Swain and Superintendent of Police Kashyap Partha Jagadish.
Senior officials, including Additional District Magistrate (General) Dr. Pramod Kumar Prusti, Chief Development Officer-cum-Executive Officer Biranchi Narayan Darwan, Sub-Collector Prakash Kumar Mishra, the Divisional Forest Officer, the BDO, and other district-level officers attended the camp to hear public grievances.
A total of 55 complaints were received, including 38 individual and 17 community-related grievances. One complaint was resolved on the spot, and financial assistance was approved for one applicant under the Red Cross scheme.
During the event, the District Collector also presented Certificates of Appreciation to departments and offices for outstanding performance in the government’s OSWAS (Odisha Secretariat Workflow Automation System) online file management system.
In July 2026, Nabarangpur district processed 6,906 government files online through OSWAS, securing the top position in Odisha. The Health Department (877 files), Education Department (765 files), and Zilla Parishad (629 files) were among the best-performing departments. Among local administrative units, Nabarangpur Block (413 files), Nandahandi Tahasil (434 files), and Nabarangpur Municipality (1,012 files) recorded the highest online file disposal. The Collector encouraged other offices to further improve digital governance and increase online file processing to enhance public service delivery.
