Jeypore,Aug 25 [UDN}: Traffic signal lights have been installed at Gandhi Square on National Highway-26 in Jeypore town. A total of 21 digital, solar-powered signal lights in red, amber and green, along with timers, have been installed at the intersection. The administration has begun trial operations of the system. Police personnel and municipal staff monitored vehicular movement for nearly three hours and adjusted the signal timings accordingly.
The signal system will become fully operational after zebra crossings are marked at six locations around the intersection, said Pooja Raut, In-charge Municipal Executive Officer. In addition, arrangements have been made to stop vehicles coming from the Koraput side before the Kolab Canal Bridge in order to reduce the additional load on the bridge.
It may be noted that frequent accidents had been reported at Gandhi Square as well as Christian Sahi Square, Laxmi Indira Panda Square and Teliguda Canal Square due to reckless driving, illegal parking and traffic mismanagement. Following repeated media reports highlighting the issue, the administration invited tenders and subsequently took steps to install the traffic signal system as part of efforts to improve traffic management and road safety in Jeypore.
