The cub, which had a normal reddish coat, was born on December 27, 2025, to tigress Jayashree and tiger Amit. It was one of three cubs born during Jayashree’s first pregnancy. However, two of the cubs died earlier.

The surviving cub was reportedly not accepted by its mother and was subsequently separated from her by zoo authorities. It was then shifted to the zoo’s rearing centre, where it was being looked after by the staff.

Cub Fell Ill Suddenly

According to zoo officials, the cub developed health complications on the night of August 14. It reportedly began eating less, became weak and developed an elevated body temperature.

Veterinarians examined the cub and collected samples for laboratory testing. Treatment was initiated with antibiotics, vitamins and saline, but its condition failed to improve.

Despite continuous monitoring and medical intervention, the cub eventually died.

Cause of Death Awaited

The exact cause of death has not yet been established. Zoo authorities have conducted a post-mortem examination, and the final report is awaited to determine the reason behind the cub’s sudden deterioration.

Following the death, the total tiger population at Nandankanan Zoological Park has declined to 26.

The zoo authorities are expected to review the veterinary findings and health records of the cub as part of the assessment into the incident.
